There are several factors contributing towards our high rates of skin cancer. These include the high numbers of Anglo-Saxon immigrants with photo sensitive skins, plus the outdoor lifestyle and the desire for a tan. Sun exposure and skin damage – especially during childhood, proximity of New Zealand to the sun and clear unpolluted skies leading to less UV filtration.
Malignant Melanoma (MM) is the most deadly form of skin cancer. It may present in 80% of cases as a new spot or in 20% of cases as a mole that changes and becomes larger, more irregular and darker. If left untreated it can spread to internal organs causing death. It is important for younger adults to realise that melanoma can arise from non-sun damaged skin, for example, soles of feet and torso’s, never exposed to the sun. In women 40% of melanomas arise on the legs.
The most common pre-cancerous skin cancer is Actinic Keratosis. Pre-cancerous lesions, like actinic keratoses, as well as warts, seborrheic keratoses, skin tags and other benign skin lesions can be treated at the Vein & Skin Clinic by a variety of non-surgical procedures.
Malignant Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma require excision. Actinic keratoses and some early Basal Cell Carcinoma can be treated by a variety of procedures including radiofrequency surgery and Photodynamic Therapy at the Vein & Skin Clinic.
The cost of this procedure varies according to the areas that require treatment and whether the area is treated alone or in conjunction with other areas. (This is most common).
