Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can be treated with Botox®/Dysport®.

The medical term for excessive sweating is Hyperhidrosis, a condition that affects millions of people all over the world.

Uncontrolled sweating can occur in various parts of the body including the hands, feet or underarms. Sweating is often aggravated by stress, heat, exercise and spicy foods.

Here at our Clinic, we can treat excessive sweating with botulinum toxin injections.

By targeting specific eccrine sweat glands in the armpit, the injections block the release of a chemical, stopping tiny underarm muscles squeezing out perspiration.

For sweating in other parts of the body, such as the palms and feet, a similar treatment is used. Due to the sensitivity of the locations a topical anaesthetic is coated over the area to be treated for an hour before administering the injections.

The treatment itself doesn’t take too long, and the effects can last up to a year with some patients.

FAQ's

How is excessive armpit sweating treated?

Botox®/Dysport® can be used to treat excessive underarm sweating.

An experienced doctor or cosmetic nurse at the Vein and Skin Clinic injects Botox®/Dysport® to specific eccrine sweat glands in the armpit. Botox®/Dysport® blocks the release of a chemical. This stops tiny underarm muscles squeezing out perspiration.

How are sweaty palms and feet treated?

Treatment is similar to armpits.  Usually more Botox®/Dysport® is required. Treatment is more painful, so topical anaesthetic and Penthrox (akin to laughing gas used by dentists) is used.  This makes the procedure quite acceptable to patients.

How long will the treatment last?

After the first treatment, effects last between 6 -12 months. This may vary. When symptoms return, see your doctor or cosmetic nurse.

What is the treatment like?

The area to be treated is coated with a numbing topical anaesthetic for an hour. A series of tiny injections of Botox®/Dysport® is then administered. Sweating diminishes significantly over the next 2-3 days.
