Each skin condition brings its own issues, causes, and treatments.
We’ve put together 3 of the most common skin complaints, their causes, and what can be done to help.
Sun Damaged Skin
Sunlight is literally radiation, and as you would expect, isn’t good for your skin. That’s because this ultraviolet radiation changes your very DNA, resulting in mutations which can lead to lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and even cancer.
One of the biggest problems with sun damaged skin is the fact that the damage might not show up for years, luring people into a false sense of security. Always use sun cream when out in the sun for long periods, even if you think you don’t need it. On a cloudy day 40% of UV light still hits the ground – and your skin.
Us Kiwis have to be especially careful when it comes to sun damaged skin. We have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, around 4 times higher than the UK, America and Canada. 70,000 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with skin cancer every year, and many of these cases could’ve been avoided if people protected themselves better.
Acne
No one is 100% sure what causes acne, but it is thought that genetics, diet and lifestyle all play a part. And while the disease seems to be reaching epidemic proportions, there are treatments available.
Rosacea
As a chronic condition Rosacea can persist for a long time and, in any individual, the severity tends to fluctuate. It is similar to acne in that it causes small pus-filled spots and bumps, but it’s also characterised by a persistent redness, similar to a permanent blush.
Again, like acne, the cause of Rosacea is not fully understood, but may be linked to genetics and diet. Your immune system may play a part, with stress, spicy food and exercise all contributing to the condition.
