Having been around for almost 40 years now, there have been a lot of misconceptions, rumours and bad press about the procedure, but we’re here to put a few things straight.
Liposuction is an alternative to diet and exercise
A common sense attitude to diet and exercise is always the best way to lose weight, with liposuction a last attempt to get rid of those stubborn fatty areas which just won’t go away.
Liposuction is not designed as a weight-loss tool, it’s more about body sculpture.
Recovery time for liposuction takes ages
Only a local anaesthesia is used, minimising pain in the area for up to 12 hours after the procedure. Add to that there is virtually no blood loss, decreased bruising, and minimal discomfort, and most people are quick to return to normal activities, including work.
Liposuction is for women only
In men, fat tends to form within and around the abdominal contours, as well as superficially on the abdomen. it gives men breasts, and gathers around the neck/chin area. Liposuction can be used to trim these areas of excess fat, giving men a more “chiseled” look, boosting self-esteem and encouraging exercise to keep up this new and improved look.
Liposuction is a great way to get rid of cellulite
Liposuction won’t remove cellulite because it’s not the underlying fat that causes it, it’s the connective tissue closer to the surface. However, liposuction does assist the skin’s contractibility, so some benefits may be seen.
The fat will return in another area
If you tend to put fat on around your thighs for example, then after liposuction, that’s where you body will continue to send it. The only difference now is, there are less fat cells to store it, so the remaining fat cells will simply grow to accommodate it.
But of course, a strict control of diet and exercise will help you maintain the results of liposuction.
Liposuction results are magic and permanent
No matter what your weight, or whether you’ve had liposuction, a healthy and balanced diet is essential, along with plenty of regular exercise. Liposuction can help you get on track, but it’s up to you to stay on that track.
If you go back to an unhealthy lifestyle after the procedure, then you will start to gain weight again, and in the same places. Liposuction isn’t a magic cure for obesity – it’s more of a second chance to change the way you look. At the end of the day, it’s all down to you.
